Kevin M. Fletcher

Kevin M. Fletcher (b. 1992) is a Hispanic American mixed-media painter and muralist based in Miami. His work is driven by a fascination with people and places, exploring the perceptions of identities we develop, display, and conceal. With over 14 years of experience in architecture and design, Kevin's passion for visualizing ideas is deeply influenced by the cultural interactions between people and their environments. His architectural background informs his art, drawing from experiences and memories of projects across Florida, the Caribbean, and the Middle East.

In his current workflow, digital processes are crucial, often serving as the initial visualization of new painting concepts. Through iterations of image manipulation and digital painting, ideas are transformed into layered visuals and sketches. These digital explorations then evolve into physical paintings and murals using mixed media and acrylics.

Artist Statement

I create figurative portraits that delve into perception, identity, and emotion. My works capture the essence of a subject's character in fragmented, bound moments, which I often refer to as "momentary portraits" due to their temporal nature. This process of discovery unfolds not only in the final piece but also throughout the painting's development.

The gaze of my subjects often draws immediate attention, evoking a familiar sense of recognition. I am intrigued by how our subconscious quickly identifies known forms. In each portrait, I use geometry, vibrancy, and darkness to create distinguishable focal points and explore unfamiliar aspects of the subject's identity. As I fill each canvas, I consciously depict a gradual revelation of the subject’s essence.

Digital processes play a crucial role in my current workflow, serving as the initial step in visualizing new pieces. Through digital sketching, painting, and image manipulation, I develop ideas before applying physical brushstrokes to canvas. This method allows me the freedom to explore and refine my work beyond the confines of my studio. My digital sketchbook has become an integral part of my process, inspired by travels and everyday interactions within my neighborhood. My work reflects these captured thoughts and observations, portraying the diverse identities around me.

In my paintings, the use of bold, contrasting colors and intricate geometric patterns not only defines the form but also creates a layered depth that invites viewers to explore and engage with the complexity of human identity and emotion. Each piece is a study of character and a visual narrative that evolves with every glance.
